Iyengar Yoga in Ventura and Santa Barbara County

Do you know who the gems of good certified Iyengar teachers in the Ventura & SB county are? This article introduces them all. These are all the certified Iyengar teachers along the coast. north of LA to Santa Barbara.

The Ojai Iyengar Yoga Center

Tal Messica, in the small, beautiful town of Ojai, a new Iyengar yoga center quietly popped up in early summer 2013. He and his wife Etahl, both from Israel, had just arrived to town. Etahl was pregnant and new life meant a need for a new beginning. “We were looking to find more space to teach when we stumbled upon this beautiful studio” says Etahl, “I was asking about renting hours when Tal’s eyes were all in a different place.” They walked out and Tal was ready to open a studio. “It was the right time and the perfect place,” says Tal who was being nagged for years by Etahl to open their own place. That is how the wonderful Ojai Iyengar Center came into being and it has had a steady growth of people from Oxnard, Camarillo, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and of course, Ojai.

What makes this place special is the community that has formed within the center. After class, people from different backgrounds all come to drink coffee after class (all are welcome), we talk about anything in the world and share our stories with each other. We have become a family, united by the practice of Iyengar yoga. Our center believes that the Iyengar method is like a well of knowledge full to the brim with gifts. It cannot be compared to anything else, and surpasses all other forms of yoga or exercise.

Nita and Lauren at The Ojai Iyengar Center

We hold daily classes in the Ojai Iyengar Center, and starting March 2015, new beginner classes will open lead by teachers taking the teacher training course with Marla Apt.

We have workshops with the best teachers from around the world, some well-known and others hidden gems, but all with excellent teaching skills coming from Israel, France and the USA.

We also have a special day of the week dedicated to self-practice, which we think is most important to develop ones independence.

Suza teaches yoga for her elderly clients

Suza Francina has taught yoga since 1972. Born in 1949 in The Hague, Holland, she is of Dutch-Indonesian heritage. Suza brings to her classes a natural sense of humor and a lifetime of experience teaching all ages and levels of ability, with a special focus on yoga for people at midlife and older. Before becoming a yoga teacher, Suza worked as a home healthcare provider for convalescents and the elderly. She befriended and cared for many elders until they died, which gave her the opportunity to observe firsthand the mental and physical changes that often occur in the later years. Her studies with older teachers, including Felicity Green, Toni Montez, Diana Clifton, Beverly Graves, and many others, opened her eyes to the benefits of yoga for her elderly clients- --both for living and as preparation for dying.

B.K.S. Iyengar wrote in his foreword to The New Yoga for People Over 50 , "Suza Francina presents yoga in a way that creates confidence in readers to be independent and strong." Likewise, in her classes Suza aims to instill confidence in her students of all ages -- - and especially the older practitioners. Suza is a former mayor of Ojai, a longtime community activist ("green yoga"), and an animal advocate. She is a mother of two and a grandmother. Her family also includes several dogs, cats, and other rescue animals.

Suza Francina is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and a graduate of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She has taught nationally and internationally, at the Omega Institute, Yoga Journal Conferences, and other venues. She is the former director of the Ojai Yoga Center and currently teaches in Ojai and Ventura, California, at Sacred Space Studio, the Ventura Yoga Studio, and Yoga Jones, as well as at her private home studio. She is the author of six books translated into many language , including four popular books on yoga for people at midlife and older: Yoga for People Over 50 (Devin Adair, 1977); The New Yoga for People Over 50 (Health Communications, Inc., 1997); Yoga and the Wisdom of Menopause (HCI, 2003); and The New Yoga for Healthy Aging (HCI 2007).

Nancy Roberts

Nancy Roberts is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher in Santa Barbara. She's been teaching group classes and private classes for 20 years in her home studio. She's traveled to India five times to study directly with the Iyengars. Nancy says “being able to be a part of someone's life and help them stay present through its many ups and downs is what drives my practice and teaching. Every class offers a challenge of how to meet this person where they are right now and take them to a place of calm, peace, health, well-being, alignment...whatever is needed in that moment through the practice of asana and pranayama. I get great fulfillment when I see my students with MS that I've been teaching for years walking up-right and doing standing postures and back bends, or watching my 82 year-old student moving around like she's in her 50's! Just knowing that I had a hand in helping them and that I'm lucky enough to earn my living doing it, is a real blessing!”

Nancy created a yoga practice app for the i-Phone called Yoga Practice on the Go” and also puzzle books on yoga which you can see at yogawordpuzzles.com. You can visit her website at nancylynnroberts.com
